From Zero to One Hundred. Nothing special there, but I want to get there before I turn 40. Nine years to do it and thousands of marathons to choose from. This is my 100BEFORE40 project.
39 - Gift of the Givers Township Marathon - Eldorado Park, South Africa, 25 February 2018 After completing the KIX Senshu International Marathon, I promised to go and play with “other children” at the Gift of the Givers Township Marathon. Honestly, it was just a promise. One that I was not sure I would keep. I had not even registered for the race. I also did not know if there would be late entries on race day. But you know how runners roll. We make decisions on the go when it comes to running matters. You just dream it up and find a way of turning it into reality. As the week progressed, I was not sure that I would be able to run the Township Marathon and kept a very low profile. I didn’t even tell my wife that I would follow through on the promise and run the Township Marathon. Photo - Malepe Makgaka I spent the day before the Township Marathon wondering whether to go to the race or not. Finally, just before I went to sleep, I put together my running stuff, getting ...
25 - Knysna Forest Marathon, Knysna, South Africa - 15 July 2017 I missed the 2017 Comrades Marathon, because of three bucket list races that I wanted to run in June and July. I ran the Victoria Falls Marathon and completely enjoyed it. I missed the Big Five Marathon because of witchcraft. I blame witchcraft, because there is nothing else that can make a person prepare for a race for seven months, travel for about 400km and their car break down 13km away from the start line some 30 minutes before the race starts. That is what happened to me. This cannot be a miracle. It has to be witchcraft. As if this was not enough, I was not able to run the third bucket list marathon, the Mauritius Marathon, because of a very unhealthy bank account balance. After realizing (more like accepting) that the Mauritius Marathon was going to set me on a collision course with Agatha, because of the cost, I decided to abandon it. I had sold the Mauritius Marathon to her as an away ...
49 - Kigali International Peace Marathon, Kigali, Rwanda, 20 May 2018 Every second year or so, my family embarks on a great trek to the east. East Africa. Uganda. They say, “wise men from the east”; I say, “beautiful women from the east”. This may be a bit of a stretch, but I know of a "beautiful woman from the East", my wife. We were set to travel to Uganda sometime in 2017, but the Athens Marathon, The Authentic got in the way. Kisoro, the village (even though Agatha will argue that it’s a town) that Agatha comes from, had to give way to the Athens Marathon, The Authentic. We had to delay the trip to Uganda until sometime in 2018. When 2018 arrived, the 100BEFORE40 Asia leg got in the way and we pushed the trip to Uganda to mid-2018. Postponing the trip to mid-2018 proved to be a brilliant idea in the end. It coincided with the running of the Kigali International Peace Marathon in May. I had read and heard a lot about the 1994 genocide in Rwanda. I had always wante...
