From Zero to One Hundred. Nothing special there, but I want to get there before I turn 40. Nine years to do it and thousands of marathons to choose from. This is my 100BEFORE40 project.
39 - Gift of the Givers Township Marathon - Eldorado Park, South Africa, 25 February 2018 After completing the KIX Senshu International Marathon, I promised to go and play with “other children” at the Gift of the Givers Township Marathon. Honestly, it was just a promise. One that I was not sure I would keep. I had not even registered for the race. I also did not know if there would be late entries on race day. But you know how runners roll. We make decisions on the go when it comes to running matters. You just dream it up and find a way of turning it into reality. As the week progressed, I was not sure that I would be able to run the Township Marathon and kept a very low profile. I didn’t even tell my wife that I would follow through on the promise and run the Township Marathon. Photo - Malepe Makgaka I spent the day before the Township Marathon wondering whether to go to the race or not. Finally, just before I went to sleep, I put together my running stuff, getting ...
How did we end up here? I have often said my 100BEFORE40 story is about the journey, not the destination. Therefore, I always try to find interesting, exciting, or challenging pit stops along this journey. Some are fun, some are challenging, and some are outright brutal. The 3 Amigos was challenging. What is “The 3 Amigos” “Three Amigos” is actually a Western comedy that was released in 1986. However, this is not what we are on about here. It is a different three amigos. Here we are talking about “ The 3 Amigos” I first heard of ”The 3 Amigos” a few years ago from mis amigos , Julian “ The Legend ” Karp and Don “ The Pink Tutu Runner ” Rukanda. I intended to run “The 3 Amigos” with them in 2020. However, an injury kept me off the road towards the end of 2019 and I could not make it to “The 3 Amigos” in 2020. The years 2020 and 2021 were “wasted two years” for me. I ran only 3 marathons in 2020, just before the Covid-19 induced lockdown. I ran 1...
5 - The Two Countries Marathon, Zimbabwe - South Africa, 26 September 2015 The month of June was one of the longest months in 2015 for me. It was the first month after the Comrades Marathon. I could have forgiven anyone for wishing me a happy new year. June felt like January. I was convinced a new year had just started after the Comrades Marathon. I had prepared for the Comrades Marathon for a long time. After the Comrades Marathon climax, I had to start again. Starting again meant I could not run for the whole of June and half of July. I could not run as for two reasons. I was recovering from all the beating my body had taken at the Comrades Marathon. I was also recovering from the severe infection I had contracted just before the Comrades Marathon. This sabbatical from running gave me a lot of time to think about my next move. I would go for hours, especially on Saturday and Sunday mornings, thinking of races that I would do as soon as I got back on the road. I looked fo...
